John W. Jones at Edisto Island Museum

John W. Jones is a lifelong resident of Columbia, SC, and has been a freelance artist and illustrator for more than 25 years. He uses oils, acrylics and watercolors and has been drawing since early childhood. His goal is to paint the African American experience, starting with the slave trade in Africa, through the Middle Passage and pre-Civil War era, and to contrast it with African Americans today.
Jones is the artist and author of the book and traveling exhibit, Confederate Currency: The Color of Money, Images of Slavery in Confederate and Southern States’ Currency. His exhibit has been featured in several respected media outlets, including the New York Times, Time Magazine, CNN and NPR. He has received several awards, including merit awards for his works in the Piccolo Spoleto Festival Art Show. In 2017, Jones received the Consul General’s Award of Milan, Italy, for Cultural Diplomacy.
