JONATHAN GREEN CELEBRATES GULLAH WOMEN

Jonathan Green was born in 1955 in Gardens Corner, South Carolina, in the heart of the Lowcountry. He was raised by his grandmother, from whom he learned the Gullah language and culture of the Gullah community. After high school, he joined the US Air Force and then enrolled at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where he earned a BFA in 1982. Since his graduation, Green has had a highly successful career in art, and he has earned critical acclaim for his interpretation of Gullah culture. To this day, his Gullah heritage is the single greatest influence on his work.

Green has long demonstrated his support of community and non-profit organizations for fundraising and public relations endeavors including support for education, the arts, healthcare and reading programs, among others. This exhibit is part of his program to contribute to the well-being of people and community. The unique, dedicated poster of "The Bottle Tree" is a manifestation of Green's life as a "servant leader." The Edisto Island Historic Preservation Society is truly grateful for his support of our museum.
